Demotapes
- Always
protect your songs before letting them hear to
anyone (and certainly before sending demos to record companies).
- Make
sure your address/phone number and your name is on every tape or CD you send to people. Also state that the songs are protected.
- Make
sure that you make a brief selection of your best songs.
Put the best songs in the beginning of the tape/CD.
- Keep the demo songs short because record companies mostly
only listen to the first 30 or 45 seconds. Maybe you could
make a special remix with the best ideas in the beginning
of the song...
- Make
everything look nice and professional. Add a short
letter to your demo in which you give them a short
biography of the group/act.
- Learn
from the reactions you get ! Open up your mind for ideas
and tips from other people and most of all: develop
your own style!!! It's no good when you try to copy
someone's "sound". Everyone will refer to the original
and say that the original is better. If you've got your
own style, there's nothing/no-one to refer to !
- Let objective people listen to your music.
Friends or family members are always influenced and because
of that, the'll give you their subjective opinion.

- Don't
believe what A&R managers or any other professional
tells you whe you give them a demo and they say "It's
good, but....". When they say so, forget it!
It means you'd better start all over again and don't get
your hopes up on getting a deal for that demo. If it's
really good, you'll know.
- The
most important thing in a song is the idea ! A good choice
of sounds and a decent mixing will definitely help as
well, but the idea remains the most important aspect of
any song !
- Positive
thinking helps ! (remain realistic though)
Good
luck to all of you out there !
